Finland contributes to better knowledge of international law in African universities

Finland supports an international law seminar held in Ghana from 15 to 26 August. The two-week seminar at the Kofi Annan Centre is intended for African international law teachers and researchers. The aim of the seminar is to deepen their knowledge of international law.

Finland supports long-term projects aimed to reinforce compliance with the Rule of Law on the national and international levels.

For example, Finland has contributed on a regular basis to the UN Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law, which among other things offers training to legal professionals working in the governments of developing counties.

This year Finland supports a two-week seminar at the Kofi Annan Centre that is targeted to African teachers and researchers of international law.

The seminar is to be established as an annual event to enhance the knowledge of international law at the faculties of law of the African universities.

The benefits of the seminar will be multiplied as the participants disseminate what they have learned at their own universities.

Work to promote international law

This year Finland also aims to present a joint Nordic candidate for the membership of the UN International Law Commission.

The candidate is Dr Marja Lehto, who now works as a Senior Expert at the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The election will take place at the 71st session of the General Assembly in November 2016.

Having a member at the Commission would provide Finland with a key position to participate in reinforcing international law and norm-based international order.
