The fourth edition of She Forum Africa was held in Abuja at the NAF Conference Centre on 25 May 2017. Among the panelists was the Ambassador of Finland Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury. She was part of the opening panel session, titled 'Democracy, Leadership & Governance', together with prominent women from the MacArthur Foundation, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and Metropolitan Law Firm. The keynote presentation at the event was made by Ambassador Fati Balla Abubakar.
The Finnish Ambassador stressed the importance of education and gender equality. She also spoke about the power of example. For the women in Finland, at the time, it was important to have the first female President of the Republic. She also reminded that true gender equality will not be possible until it is genuinely seen as a good thing by all and for all – women, girls, men, and boys alike. In this respect, the UN Women 'He for She' campaign, which was just launched in Nigeria, was doing important work. She said that the current President of Finland had joined the campaign already some time ago, and referred to the many powerful and successful Nigerian women and men who can act as great role models. These include the world-renowned writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, whose books are very popular in Finland, too.
She Forum Africa is a pan-African Women Development, Leadership and Lifestyle Organization with a mission to amplify personal development opportunities for African women through strategic mentoring and life-long learning via a home-grown, African-led initiative. Its Advisory Board includes H.E. Toyin Saraki, Founder and President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, who was also present at the meeting, and spoke to the participants about women as leaders.
