The 100th Anniversary of Finland's independence was celebrated in Abuja on 6 December 2017, at a reception hosted by the Ambassador of Finland.
In their speeches, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Nigeria Hon. Khadija Bukar Abba Ibrahim, and Ambassador Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury praised the active relations between Finland and Nigeria, especially in the area of trade. Both made reference to the recent visit of the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development of Finland to Nigeria with a large business delegation, as well as other high-level visits. They also mentioned the main Centenary Anniversary activity of Finland in Nigeria, the CodeBus Africa project that took place in February, and was designed to encourage especially girls into computer coding.
Among other high-level guests who attended the occasion were Nigerian Minister of Health Hon. Isaac Adewole, Minister of State for Health Hon Dr. Osagie Ehanire, and Minister of State for Power, Works and Housing Hon. Mustapha Baba Shehuri. Guests also included Nigerian high officials, diplomats, the Finnish community in Nigeria, Finnish companies and their partners, members of the Nigerian-Finnish Association, representatives of academia, and organisations that the Ambassador and her staff have met and worked with, as well as Nigerians who have lived and studied in Finland, and numerous members of the media.
